HOTWINGS® Tatarian Maple  (Acer tataricum  'GarAnn' PP 15,023) is the brainchild of Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery owner Gary Epstein.  It started as a quest to find an alkaline soil tolerant alternative to the popular Amur Maple (Acer ginalla).  Gary took a chance and started growing seedlings of Tatarian Maple (Acer tataricum) because of it's similar mature size and ornamental features - but was reported to be much more adaptable to alkaline soils.

Welcome to “the Hole”!  Although the name doesn’t sound like it, “the Hole” is a tidy, irrigated staging area for will-call orders.  When you call in an order for pick-up, this is where we’ll send you.  We thought “Will-call” sounded too boring, so our expert shipping manager, Jason, gave this area it’s colorful nickname.  You’ll find your beautiful plant material neatly lined up here and ready to go, so you can get back to work quickly!  We hope to see you soon in “the Hole”!

Cheyenne, Wyoming is home to one of our region’s greatest horticultural treasures: the former USDA Horticultural Field Station now known as the USDA High Plains Grasslands Research Station. The station opened in 1929 with a mission to find fruit and vegetable crops adaptable to our local climatic conditions. USDA plant explorers traveled the colder regions of the globe searching for edibles that would be adaptable to the harsh conditions of the high plains, and they sent plants back to the station for evaluation. Along the way, a collection of ornamental woody plants was assembled as well.
