HOTWINGS® Tatarian Maple (Acer tataricum 'GarAnn' PP 15,023) is the brainchild of Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery owner Gary Epstein. It started as a quest to find an alkaline soil tolerant alternative to the popular Amur Maple (Acer ginalla). Gary took a chance and started growing seedlings of Tatarian Maple (Acer tataricum) because of it's similar mature size and ornamental features - but was reported to be much more adaptable to alkaline soils.
Soon, it became evident that there is a great deal of genetic varaiability in the seedlings of Tatarian Maple. Some had pink to vibrant red samaras (the "helicopter" seeds common in Maples), while others were less colorful. Some trees had exciting red to orange fall color, while others were pale yellow. Structurally, some trees had strong branch unions, while others showed signs of poor structure and bark inclusions. As these differences became noticable, the selection process began.
Gary and the staff at Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery began walking the rows of seedling Tatarian Maples, hunting for the brightest samaras in the summer, the most vibrant fall color, and the strongest structured trees. By this time there were hundreds of trees to select from, and many trees showed promise. However, young HOTWINGS® soon rose to the top in all 3 categories, being superior to all the other Tatarian Maples at the nursery.
In 2007, HOTWINGS® was introduced by Plant Select® (an organization that introduces and recommends plants that thrive in the Rocky Mountain and High Plains region), and today it is available at finer nurseries and garden centers across North America.
